For many women experiencing homelessness, the challenges go beyond finding a place to live.

They may also be dealing with trauma, mental health challenges, domestic abuse, financial instability or long periods without a safe and supportive environment.

Sister League of San Diego provides supportive housing for women facing these situations, along with services that help them regain stability and move towards greater independence.

The organisation operates two residences in San Diego and supports women through housing, mental wellness services and day programmes. Around half of its residents work or attend school, reflecting the organisation’s focus on helping women gradually rebuild their lives while living in a stable environment.

What makes Sister League’s approach meaningful is the combination of housing and community.

Women are given not only a place to stay, but also the time, support and encouragement needed to regain confidence, manage their mental health and begin planning for the future.

For some, progress may mean returning to work.

For others, it may mean continuing their education, rebuilding trust, developing greater independence or simply feeling safe again after a difficult period.

Nuria Haro is the Executive Director of Sister League of San Diego.

Through her work with the organisation, she has seen how stable housing, mental wellness support and a caring community can work together to help women move forward.
